The question of the horizon, a recurring theme in the work of Dutch conceptualist Jan Dibbets, resurfaces in this exhibition catalog from the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and The Hague. In this poetic and clever new work, Dibbets employs photographic images in an almost geometric collage, juxtaposing two photographs—a landscape and a seascape—in various ways that divide the horizon. Emerging from the 1970s European conceptual art movement, Dibbets is a significant figure in Dutch art and on the international scene. His brilliant 1994 installation, Homage to Arago, embedded bronze disks in the sidewalks of Paris to mark the meridian specified by the 18th-century astronomer. The catalog includes a strong analysis by Rudi Fuchs.
